Terms of Service
The rules of the road for using Curtain Up.
Last updated: May 12, 2026
1. What Curtain Up does
Curtain Up ("we", "us") is a web service that helps actors and theater makers rehearse a script alone. You upload the text of a play, our AI structures it into characters, acts and scenes, generates synthetic voice audio for the partner roles, and lets you run the scene live by speaking your lines into the microphone. We do not produce, publish, or distribute your script. We are a private rehearsal tool, not a theater, agency, or content platform.
2. Your account
You sign in with a Google or Apple account. You are responsible for keeping your account secure and for any activity that happens under it. You must be old enough in your jurisdiction to enter a binding contract (in most countries 13+ with parental consent, 16+ or 18+ without). Curtain Up may suspend or delete an account that violates these Terms or applicable law.
3. Your content (the script)
When you upload a script, you keep all the rights you had in it. You grant Curtain Up a limited, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, process, transmit, and feed your script to our AI providers (Google Gemini for structure analysis and text-to-speech, OpenAI Realtime for live rehearsal) for the sole purpose of operating the service for you. This license ends when you delete the audition or your account.
You promise that you have the right to upload the script — either because you wrote it, you hold a license, the work is in the public domain in your country, or your use is otherwise lawful (for example, personal study and rehearsal under a fair-use / fair-dealing exception). You alone are responsible for confirming this. Uploading a script you don't have the right to use can violate copyright law.
We do not claim any ownership in your script, your recorded rehearsals, or the synthetic audio our system generates from your script. We do not sell your script content to third parties, and we do not use it to train any AI model.
4. AI processing and accuracy
Curtain Up uses third-party AI models (currently Google Gemini and OpenAI Realtime). Their output is probabilistic: script analysis, emotion tags, voice casting, and live matching are based on statistical inference and will sometimes be wrong, awkward, or incomplete. We do not warrant that the AI will correctly understand any line, recognize speech in noisy conditions, or produce performances suitable for any specific purpose. Treat the tool as a rehearsal partner, not a director.
5. Acceptable use
You may not use Curtain Up to: (a) upload material that infringes someone else's copyright, trademark, or other rights; (b) generate audio impersonating a real person without their consent; (c) upload sexual content involving minors, or content that incites violence, hatred, or self-harm; (d) attempt to extract, scrape, or reuse our prompts, weights, or any underlying model; (e) probe, scan, or interfere with our infrastructure; (f) automate the service beyond ordinary human use. Violations may result in account termination and, where required, a report to the relevant authorities.
6. Voice data
When you run a rehearsal, your microphone audio is streamed to OpenAI's Realtime API for real-time transcription and command recognition. We do not store the raw audio. The transcript may be retained briefly in your rehearsal log for the duration of the session, and is deleted with the session. OpenAI's own retention policies apply to data they receive; see their privacy policy. We do not build a voice biometric profile.
7. Payment and free tier
Curtain Up is currently free to use within reasonable limits. If we introduce paid plans we will give you advance notice and the option to continue on a free tier. Specific limits, prices, and refund rules will be presented to you before you subscribe.
8. Termination
You may delete any audition or your entire account at any time from the dashboard. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, are inactive for an extended period, or where we are required to do so by law. On termination we will delete your scripts and generated audio within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law.
9. Disclaimers and liability
The service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, to the maximum extent allowed by your local law. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of profits, data, or reputation, arising out of your use of the service. Our total liability to you for any claim is capped at the amount you paid for the service in the 12 months before the claim arose (and zero if you paid nothing).
10. Changes
We may update these Terms. Material changes will be announced in-app or by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of the service after that date constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.
